PSA Peugeot Citroën Eight-Month Sales Up 11.4%
Paris - PSA Peugeot Citröen has gone through strong growth in unit sales during the eight months ending August 31, 2001, with an 11.4% gain over the prior-year period. In all, 2,074,000 vehicles were sold, of which 1,235,000 Peugeots and 839,000 Citroëns. Therefore, the Group is expected to meet its full-year goal of three million vehicles sold. Western Europe (17 countries) In Western Europe, where the market for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles contracted by 1.4% for the period, PSA Peugeot Citröen sales rose by 9.5%. Registrations totaled 1,705,000 units, of which 977,000 Peugeots and 728,000 Citroëns. The Group strengthened its position as Europe’s second-largest carmaker, increasing its market share to 14.8%, from 13.5% at August 31, 2000 and 13.7% at December 31, 2000. In France, market share widened to 33.4% from 31.6% one year earlier, while registrations rose 11.4% to 618,000 units from 554,000 for the prior-year period. In the United Kingdom, where the market expanded by 4.9%, registrations of PSA Peugeot Citröen vehicles surged 20.8% to 231,000 units from 192,000 for the first eight months of 2000. In Italy, registrations rose 4.2% to 146,000, lifting the Group’s market share to 7.8% from 7.4% at August 31, 2000. In Spain, registrations were stable, up +0.5% to 269,000 units in a market that increased by a modest 1.2%. In a German market that declined by 2.5%, registrations of Group vehicles rose 0.5% to 114,000 units, edging market share up to 4.7% from 4.6% for the first eight months of 2000. Markets outside Western Europe Outside Western Europe, unit sales rose 20.8% to 372,000 vehicles, of which 258,000 Peugeots and 114,000 Citroëns. In the Mercosur region, demand varied from one country to another, rising 19.8% in Brazil while decreasing 37.6% in Argentina. For the region as a whole, registrations of PSA Peugeot Citröen vehicles expanded to 55,000 units, an increase of 8.6% from August 31, 2000. In Brazil, registrations of Group vehicles grew by 49% to 30,000 units following the inauguration of the Porto Real plant and production launch of the Xsara Picasso and the Peugeot 206 late in the first half. In Central Europe and Turkey, where total vehicle sales were down a sharp 32.1% for the period, registrations of Peugeot and Citroën vehicles amounted to 71,000 units, a decrease by 15.5%. In China and Iran, the Group consolidated its positions during the first eight months of the year. In China, sales of Citroën cars increased by 12.1% with 37,000 vehicles sold. In Iran, Group sales have more than doubled to 60,000 units. Local production of the Peugeot 206 began in June, with Iran Khodoro, the marque’s partner, reporting more than 40,000 orders received.
